Brooklyn
by Barbara Auerbach, School Media Specialist, New York City Public Schools
Using the Brooklyn theme of the Brooklyn Expedition as a model, students
explore their neighborhoods as well as Bedford-Stuyvesant, the setting for
Joan Blos's novel, Brooklyn Doesn't Rhyme. Their explorations take them back
in time to turn-of-the-century (20th) Brooklyn; they use primary and
secondary sources to learn about the borough, yesterday and today.

Latin America
by Antoinette Byam
The essential question of this unit is, "How might the resources of a given geographic location
influence the lifestyle of the people in that area?" The lessons in this
unit utilize artifacts from the Mesoamerican exhibit at the Brooklyn
Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Children's Museum. Visits to each of
these museums are highly recommended, though not essential, for the study.

Structures
by Evelyn Polesny, Writer-in-Residence and Staff Developer with Teachers and Writers
Collaborative; Teacher at Teachers College, Columbia University.
This unit uses as a foundation Brooklyn Expedition's "Structures," in
which students make connections between organisms and things as
seemingly disparate as frogs and bridges, skeletons and houses, the
Dewey Decimal System and the relationship between rabbits and kangaroos.
Investigating the connections among such a wide array of creatures and
things helps students learn how to make connections.
