Class is one level of classification. You can really see the differences
between animals when you look at class. Animals in the same class have at
least
one thing in common with each other. There are five classes of animals in
Simon's phylum (chordata, animals with a backbone)
- mammals
- reptiles
- amphibians
- birds
- fish
You are a mammal. Would you think that
you
and Simon are in the class?
Think about Simon. Describe him. Write down everything you can see about
him.
Some things to think about:
- What does he look like?
- What do you think he eats?
- How do you think he moves?
Now think about yourself. Ask yourself the same questions. How are you and
Simon similar? These similarities are what put you and Simon in the same
class
- Mammalia.
How are you and Simon different? Write down the differences you find.
Because
of those differences, you and Simon are in different orders, families,
genera,
and species (all the smaller levels after class).
