Although the bridge looks pretty much the same as it did in 1883, there actually have been a few changes made to it, to accomodate different types of uses. Originally, people crossed the bridge by cable car or horse and carriage. Over the years, these cable cars were replaced by steam locomotives, then trolleys, and then electric trains. Today, there is only car and pedestrian traffic on the bridge. Why do you think there aren't any subway cars going across the bridge? Trucks have been banned from the bridge throughout almost its entire history. Why do you think that is?
