The walking stick's camouflage, which hides it from its predators, is one of nature's most remarkable disguises.


An exoskeleton is an external, hard, supporting structure that covers insects and crustaceans (fish with hard shells such as lobsters).

mandibles: The jaws of some animals. This term usually refers to the jaws of insects.

camouflage: the way something blends in with its surroundings in order to become less noticeable

predators: animals that kill other animals for food

The Amazing Structures of Insects 

There are more than a million known species of insects, with many more waiting to be discovered (maybe even by you!). They have hard exteriors called exoskeletons that cover them like protective suits of armor. You can learn more about different kinds of skeletons by going to Compare-a-Skeleton.

Knights wore armor for the same reason that insects have hard exoskeletons - to protect themselves from their enemies!
