In ancient Mesoamerican societies, gold was made into ritual objects, to be used in ceremonies or buried with the dead.

Only the leaders of society would have owned or used gold - it was never exchanged as money.

This gold plaque was found in a grave filled with many other beautiful objects. Scholars who have studied the site believe that it is the grave of an important local chief.

Mesoamerica is the part of Latin America that is now southern Mexico and all of the Central American countries.
