Lulu Delacre grew up in Puerto Rico, learning the legends and folktales that fill this book.

Years later, she traveled throughout South and Central America searching for an illustrated collection of stories like this one that she could share with her children. When she couldnít find one, she decided to write this book. She traveled to Mexico and Puerto Rico to research the tales and the cultures and traditions of the people who told them.
