Animals were part of everyday life for most ancient Latin Americans, since many of them were hunters, farmers, or fishers. From looking at ancient artwork, we know that animals were important symbols of power and the richness of the earth. They also provided food and transportation. Latin American culture still honors animals today - in masked festivals, art, even on money - such as this Guatemalan "quetzal."
