Metates and manos have been used since pre-Columbian times. In many homes, they are still used today.

This Guatemalan woman is using a metate and mano. Metates and manos are ancient tools for grinding plant seeds (usually corn) into meal. The meal can then be used to make tortillas.

 


 

Tortillas are a kind of round, flat bread made of cornmeal or flour. They are eaten all over Latin America.
