Every town or village in Mexico has a marketplace - an area in the village where local
merchants sell their wares. One day a week, there is an open market in the village.
Farmers and craftspeople come in from the countryside and set up stands to sell the things
they grow and make on the farm. They also buy things they need from the villagers.
The market isn't just for buying food. Other things that are often sold there are:
- food from local farms
- pottery
- handicrafts, such as textiles
- hardware
- clothing
- live animals
- herbs and spices
Villagers also go to the market to see their friends and exchange the news of the
village.
Have you ever shopped in an outdoor market, such as a farmers' market, where you live?
