In the South Coast desert where the Nasca lived, very little rain fell. Like the desert animals, the Nasca depended on this rainfall to water the plants they ate. To show how important water and nature were, Nasca ceramicists painted pictures of familiar animals, like this shore bird, on the containers they made. Do you own any objects with pictures of animals on them? What do those animals mean to you? Ceramicists are artists who work with clay. They often make containers like jugs and pots.
