Weaving and decorating cloth are important and honored skills in villages all over Central America. In most places, the most skilled weavers are women.
This has been true since pre-Columbian times. In the religion of the Maya, the goddess Ix Chel is the patroness of weaving, childbirth, and medicine - all women's activities.

Among the Aztecs, it was customary to hold weaving tools over a baby girl's head soon after she was born, to ensure that she would become a good weaver.
