Like many Latin American festivals, Carnival was introduced by the Spanish conquerors as part of Christianity, but Mexicans celebrate it in ways that reflect their Indian heritage.
The idea of the Devil came to Mexico from the Spanish, but Mexican artists created their own images of devils. Many of these images appear during Carnival, on masks and other festive objects.
