After the Spanish conquest of Peru, the descendants of the former Inca rulers wanted to
show the Spanish how important they were. They had portraits like this one painted as
proof that they came from royalty.
But in the late 18th century, some Incas rebelled against Spanish rule. The fearful
Spanish forbade pictures of Inca rulers, and destroyed many of these pictures.
This portrait of Atahuallpa may have survived because its owners hid it away.
