The Paracas people of ancient Peru wrapped their dead in symbols of the supernatural world.

This large cloth mantle was made to cover a body in the City of the Dead. The animals pictured on the cloth have faces like falcons... but other parts look like fish.

Animals like these never existed. Historians believe they represent the Paracas people's belief in duality. The creatures are a mix of two opposites: the falcon - a predator of the sky - and the fish, a prey animal of the water.

Things that cannot be explained by the laws of nature are sometimes called supernatural. If you believe in ghosts, you believe in the supernatural.

A mantle is a piece of rectangular cloth used to wrap the dead.

A predator is an animal that kills other animals for food. The animals it kills are called prey.

The City of the Dead is an ancient Paracas burial ground on the South Coast of Peru. It is also called the Necropolis.

Duality means the existence of two opposite things, like earth and sky, life and death, or predators and prey.
