by MYEEDAH

I interviewed my mother, Ruth Leslie, who has lived in Bedford Stuyvesant for 13 years.

Myeedah: What is your definition of a neighborhood?
Mom: The place where you live with your extended family and neighbors.

Myeedah: How would you describe Bed-Stuy?
Mom: Peaceful, yet lively, entertaining and culturally diverse.

Myeedah: How would you describe the people here?
Mom: A lot of young lively people, but for the most part respectful and peaceful.

Myeedah: What kind of businesses are around here?
Mom: Cafes, billiards, doctors' offices, schools, herbal and cultural shops.

Myeedah: Does your neighborhood cater to all your necessities?
Mom: Yes, it does. Everything is fairly close and efficient.

Myeedah: Are there any recreational facilities?
Mom: There is a very popular sport's bar and the YMCA.

Myeedah: What are some cultural or historical highlights of Bed-Stuy?
Mom: The Weeksville Society Houses. These are some of the oldest houses in Brooklyn.

Myeedah: What is your favorite place in your neighborhood?
Mom: My house and my block.

Myeedah: What is the worst thing about this area?
Mom: The transportation quality is poor. Bus and train lines are so sloppy.

Myeedah: What do you think Bed-Stuy is missing?
Mom: A movie theater.

Myeedah: What makes your neighborhood different from others?
Mom: There is just a different, more family-oriented vibe about Bed-Stuy.

Myeedah: If you were to describe it in one word what would it be?
Mom: Enthusiastic.
